The Mevlevi Order (Turkish: Mevlevilik), is a Sufi order founded in Konya, Turkey by the followers of Rumi, a 13th-century Persian poet, Islamic jurist, and theologian. They are also known as the Whirling Dervishes due to their famous practice of whirling, which is part of the formal Sama ceremony, and the participants are properly known as semazen-s. In 2008, UNESCO confirmed the “The Mevlevi Sema Ceremony” of Turkey as amongst the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

A nazar (Turkish: nazar boncuğu) is an eye-shaped amulet believed to protect against the evil eye(“evil eye”, from nazar and “bead” from boncuğu). The word “nazar” is derived from the Arabic نظر, “sight” or “seeing”. It is believed that if your nazar amulet cracks or breaks, it has done its job of protecting you from some misfortune or bad luck and should be replaced!
